The Hermitage
All WalksThis area of the Perthshire forest was originally designed as a pleasure ground in the 18th century. The tall Douglas firs here are among the tallest trees in Britain, and make a fantastic place to explore and enjoy a tranquil walk in nature as you follow the woodland paths along the banks of the River Braan.
The jewel in the crown of this route is Ossian’s Hall – a picturesque folly built in 1757. Nestled into the landscape, the Hall sits above the rushing Black Linn Falls and visitors can head inside the folly for the best view over the water from the viewing platform. Keep an eye out for elusive otters that visit the area, and salmon leaping up the falls in Autumn.
Ossian’s Hall is also a wedding venue, so may close during certain times when there is an event booked. To avoid disappointment, check for announcements on The Hermitage’s Instagram and Facebook pages prior to your visit.
Continuing along the path beside the river, you’ll find another folly – Ossian’s Cave – providing another whimsical stopping point on your route before you begin to circle back through the woods. Be sure to look up into the tall trees as you may spot a resident red squirrel!
The Hermitage welcomes four-legged friends in the woods, as long as they are kept under close control. There are dog poo bins in the car park, so make sure to pick up and take any waste with you. The car park here is owned by the National Trust, so parking charges apply to non-members. Alternatively, you can walk to The Hermitage from Dunkeld & Birnham Station in around 30 minutes. There are no facilities at The Hermitage, but there are many cafes and restaurants in the town.
