Linn of Dee

All Walks

The Linn of Dee was a favourite picnic spot of Queen Victoria, and visiting here it’s easy to see why. Our route follows the tranquil Glen Lui trail, way marked with blue arrows, following along the River Dee through Caledonian pinewood and into Glen Lui for postcard-perfect views towards the Cairngorms.

This route begins at the Linn of Dee car park, which is owned and maintained by the National Trust, so parking charges apply to non-members. There are toilets open in the car park from Easter until October. There is also a small information hut, which is staffed every weekend between Easter and October, and every day during school holidays between those months.

Heading out of the car park, following the blue arrows, the first point of interest is the gothic Linn of Dee bridge. Here you’ll see a plaque carved into the pink granite commemorating its opening by Queen Victoria in October 1857. Take a moment to admire the gorge below and the rushing River Dee squeeze through the gap in the rocks before heading along the river into the woods.

Following the River Dee, the trail is a mix of dirt and woodland paths, with purpose-built steps helping you along steeper sections. We’ve marked this route as moderate due to some short slopes and uneven parts with narrow sections of path – take care in inclement weather or after a period of rain as the terrain may become slippery.

Coming around to follow the Lui Water, you’ll spot the old salmon ladder tucked among the cascading water as you begin to circle your way back through the pinewoods. Keep your eyes peeled for red squirrels darting through the trees, and be sure to take a moment to admire the mountain views as you reach a clearing at the turnaround point.

Dogs are welcome across the Mar Lodge estate but need to be kept under close control or on leads, especially during bird nesting season between April and July. There are no waste bins at the car park or along the route, so make sure you take your bags with you.
