Linn of Tummel
All WalksThe Linn of Tummel covers 19 hectares of woodland, where rivers Garry and Tummel meet, just outside Pitlochry. This picturesque walk through the woods, following the rivers, is the perfect place for a quiet stroll and offers the opportunity to spot a variety of wildlife.
Our route begins at Garry Bridge, where there is a free car park. You can also take local buses from Pitlochry to nearby Faskally Campsite in around 20 minutes – from there it’s just a 10 minute walk to the start of this route. There are no facilities here, other than a bin for dog waste.
Before heading down into the woods to start your walk, head across Garry Bridge to take in beautiful views of Killiecrankie and the mountains beyond, then head back to the car park and take the set of steps down to the footpath underneath the bridge. You might see people bungee jumping here– Highland Fling offers visitors the chance to free-fall 40 metres over the River Garry from the underside of the bridge!
The footpath follows alongside the River Garry, eventually meeting the River Tummel as you make your way to the Coronation Bridge which is the turn-around point for our route, though you can easily extend this route should you wish to explore further. The Coronation Bridge was opened in 1911 to commemorate the coronation day of King George V, and it’s a picturesque viewpoint over the River Tummel below before you turn back.
The footpath along the route is uneven in parts with slopes, steps and narrow sections – be sure to wear appropriate footwear and look out for any protruding tree roots underfoot. Some parts along the riverbank have steep drops to the water below, so take care and keep dogs under close control. There are also grazing livestock in the fields adjacent to some sections of the path where it’s important to ensure your dogs don’t disturb the animals.
Once you’ve finished your walk, we recommend heading into Pitlochry where you’ll find a variety of cafes and restaurants to reward yourself for your efforts. We particularly love Cafe Calluna where they serve incredibly generous slices of cake, and dogs are welcome inside.
