Knepp Rewilding Project, Horsham – orange route
All WalksKnepp Rewilding Project is a true hidden gem in the West Sussex countryside. The estate spans over 3,500 acres of marshland, scrubland and wood pasture, and its sole aim is to create space for wildlife to thrive. With over 20km of way-marked walking trails here, it’s our go-to place for a peaceful walk in nature whenever we’re in the area. This route follows the orange trail – our favourite path to take at Knepp. This is the second longest of the way-marked routes, and it takes you on a loop past herds of old English longhorn cattle, to the ruins of Knepp Castle, and ends back at the Knepp Wilding Kitchen and shop.
The easiest way to get to Knepp is by car, using the spacious Walkers’ car park to the South of the estate where there is a suggested donation of £5. The car park fills up fast on weekends and in the Summer, so arrive early where possible! In the car park there’s a clear and detailed map showing each walking route, as well as bins for rubbish and dog waste. There are more bins in the cafe courtyard, behind the shop, but no others on the walking routes – be sure to carry your poo bags with you until you arrive back at the courtyard or car park.
The route itself is very clearly signposted with painted orange arrows and markers showing walkers which way to go at every turn. As you’re walking there is always a way-marker in sight, so it’s difficult to get lost! The terrain is a mix of well-trodden grass and dirt track, with a brief stint of walking on a quiet, paved road. If you’re bringing your dog along for walkies, Knepp advise keeping them on lead under close control due to the free-roaming wildlife across the estate. When you see the size of the old English longhorn cattle you’ll understand why it’s better to be safe than sorry! You’ll be spoilt with gorgeous views over the expansive meadows and grassland as you walk, and there’s even a treehouse viewing platform for a higher perspective. The ruins of Knepp Castle are another highlight of this route and mark the halfway point, before you begin to loop back towards the courtyard where you began. Parts of this route are very exposed, so be sure to dress for the weather and carry water for yourself and dogs on hot days – there are also dog water bowls at the cafe courtyard when you finish your walk.
The courtyard is a fantastic place to sit and relax after completing this route, with the Wilding Kitchen restaurant providing delicious lunches, and an Airstream cafe selling hot drinks and cakes. As you make your way out, be sure to pop into the shop for local produce and gifts! Find out more about walking at Knepp on our blog post.
