Holkham estate, Wells-next-the-Sea
All WalksEvery time we visit North Norfolk we take the time to visit the vast Holkham estate for a gentle stroll through the grounds. Holkham Hall, the jewel in the crown on the estate, was built in the 18th century and has been described as one of England’s finest examples of the Palladian revival style of architecture. There are many intersecting pathways to take at Holkham, but this route is our favourite for a mix of open parkland, woodland, deer-spotting opportunities and the chance to admire some of the fine architecture throughout the estate.
There is parking available at Holkham Hall for a fee, though for a quick visit we prefer to use the Holkham village car park, which is free of charge for up to 2 hours and is situated just a few minutes walk outside the North gates of Holkham estate. Dogs are welcome here but must be kept on lead due to the free-roaming deer throughout the parkland. You’ll find dog waste bins at the entrance gates to the estate as well as in the car park by Holkham Hall, but none throughout the parkland. Be sure to pick up after your dog and take bags with you until you reach a bin.
Our route is an easy one, following the well-maintained, paved pathways that run through the estate. There is a brief period of woodland walking, but this is also well-maintained terrain. Our route takes you past Holkham Hall for a sweeping view of the stunning country house, where you’ll most likely see the park’s resident deer herd relaxing on the grass. From here it’s a gentle incline past the characterful, old, thatched ice house towards the obelisk – be sure to look to the right as you walk up this path to spot the Temple tucked away in a clearing amongst the trees. The obelisk, sitting at the highest point on the approach to Holkham Hall, was built in 1730 to commemorate work on the grounds beginning. Looping past the Great Barn and Old Common plantation, you’ll head through a short stint of woodland before coming back into the parkland towards Holkham Hall. This walk is very accessible for those of all abilities, and there is a play area for children beside the main car park.
As you come back towards Holkham Hall you’ll find the comfortable and modern Courtyard Cafe, which is a great place to rest your feet and enjoy a cup of tea and a slice of cake after exploring the estate. There are toilets here and dogs are welcome throughout the indoor and outdoor seating areas.
