Sherwood Pines, Nottingham
All WalksWe love getting lost amongst the trees at a Forestry Commission site, and Sherwood Pines has to be one of the best for catering to a range of visitor needs. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful solo walk, play areas to keep little ones occupied, or just a place to let the dog run free – Sherwood Pines has something for everyone! On our route, you’ll pass interesting carved wooden artworks, Gruffalo trail sculptures, a Robin Hood themed playground (perfect for kids, as well as big kids like us!) and enjoy simply admiring the beauty of the peaceful forest all around. Our route can be easily modified as you explore – feel free to deviate from our map and take whichever path looks most appealing to you!
Visiting Sherwood Pines is easy as there is a spacious car park, though it does fill up on weekends – mostly thanks to the variety of activities on offer here, including Go Ape courses, disc golf and a Park Run on Saturday mornings. Parking charges apply to non Forestry Commission members. It’s also possible to arrive by bus on the number 14 or 15 to Kirton or Walesby from Mansfield bus station.
Forestry Commission sites are always immaculately managed and maintained, making this walk an easy one on flat, woodland paths. Be aware that there are dedicated cycling routes throughout Sherwood Pines that intersect the walking trails at multiple points – keep little ones and dogs safe by being vigilant of these crossover points. Dogs are welcome off lead at Sherwood Pines but must be kept under close control. While it’s fantastic to have uninterrupted forest surroundings, annoyingly there are no poo bins past the entrance and car park, so be sure to pick up after your dog and take any bags with you.
Once you arrive back at the car park after your walk, you’ll find the cafe serving a variety of food and drink. Dogs are not permitted inside, but there is a covered outside terrace where dogs are welcome, and lots of picnic benches. There is a separate toilet block next to the cafe.
