Ditchling Beacon to Jack and Jill windmills

This route takes you along the South Downs Way from the highest point in East Sussex – Ditchling Beacon – to the Jack and Jill windmills at Clayton, and back. These Grade II listed windmills are a charming point of interest on the South Downs, with a picturesque, sweeping view over Sussex behind.

There’s a National Trust car park at Ditchling Beacon (parking charge applies for non-members) and the 79 bus runs from Brighton to the Beacon making it easy to get here without a car. Dogs can roam off lead along the Downs, though it’s important to be vigilant of grazing livestock in fields along the way – stay safe and put dogs on lead where necessary. Dog waste bins can be found at both Ditchling Beacon and at the windmills – be sure to pick up after your dogs and take bags with you until you reach a bin.

We’ve categorised this route as an easy one despite the gently undulating landscape of the Downs. Make sure you wear comfortable, sturdy footwear as the chalk path leading to the windmills can become slippery or loose after a period of inclement weather. Mostly though, the terrain is a well-trodden grass footpath meaning you can relax and enjoy the panoramic views over Sussex as you walk!

At the windmills, there’s a converted horse box cafe called The Coffee Mill for walkers to grab a hot drink or slice of cake and enjoy the views. There’s also a seasonal drinks / ice cream van at Ditchling Beacon.
