Chuck Hatch, Ashdown Forest

All Walks

This walk is perfect for those looking to get out and explore on the Ashdown Forest. Our route takes you along the criss-crossing grass and dirt paths through a variety of scenery, and includes a stop off at the famous Pooh Sticks Bridge from the stories of Winnie the Pooh! We’ve rated this walk as easy – there are gentle ascents and descents across the landscape, but nothing strenuous. As the route takes around 2 hours to complete, and parts of the Forest are very exposed, be sure to pack a rain coat on a wet weather day and be prepared with plenty of water during the Summer as there are no facilities on the route. No matter the weather, the views here are stunning and we notice something new each time we visit!

As this walk is a loop there are a few points from which you could begin, though we’d recommend starting from either Gills Lap car park or Pooh car park. There are bus stops dotted across the Forest, though the 262 community bus that serves these stops only runs on Saturdays, between Uckfield and Hartfield. If you do take the bus, there are stops at Gills Lap or Chuck Hatch Lane (just a 3 minute walk to Pooh car park where you can join this walking route).

This loop is perfect for dog walking as dogs can roam freely off lead here, though be aware there are Exmoor ponies in electric-fenced paddocks, as well as many horse riders, across the Forest. Be vigilant and put your dog on lead when necessary. There are no poo bins in the Forest so ensure you take your poo bags with you!
