Cardiff Centenary Walk

All Walks

Cardiff’s Centenary Walk is a self-guided tour around the city, where you can stop off at the sights that interest you and wander at your own pace. The walk route guides you to historical points of interest, architectural highlights, popular sights as well as some hidden gems along the way. Though the entire route can be walked in around 40 minutes, you’ll need to allow time to stop at each point of interest – some will require more time than others. For example, you could easily spend an hour or two at the National Museum of Wales (number 27), whereas theAneurin Bevan statue (number 14) is a much shorter stop. We recommend a longer pause at sites like Cardiff Castle, and the National Museum of Wales, to make the most of your visit.

The Cardiff Centenary Walk was established in 2005 as part of centennial celebrations, marking 100 years since Cardiff achieved city status. There are 41 way markers highlighting the points of interest along the way, each with a gold plaque embedded in the pavement with the name of the stop, the number it corresponds to on the route, as well as an arrow pointing you in the direction of your next way marked stop.

Our highlights were Cardiff Market, the Animal Wall, Cardiff Castle, the National Museum of Wales and the many historical shopping arcades along the way. The route is circular so you can join at any point that suits you, but we began our walk from the first way marker.

You can find the official Cardiff Centenary Walk PDF, with information about each stop along the walk, here.

As the walk route takes you through and around the centre of Cardiff city, you’ll be spoilt for choice with ample cafes, restaurants and pubs that make good rest points along your way. If you are planning to walk this route with a dog, there are many bins throughout the city for disposing of your dog’s waste. It’s worth considering that as dogs are not allowed inside some of the points of interest, such as the National Museum of Wales, you may find it easier to follow this route without a dog or skip some of the stopping points.
