Arundel circular
All WalksThis easy loop takes you around all the best sights and views in Arundel. For more details on what to see, where to eat, where to stay and more, head to our Exploring Arundel blog post.
This route begins and ends at Mill Road car park for easy arrival and departure, though it is just a 12 minute walk from Arundel train station to the centre of town, and the beginning of this walk, if you choose to arrive by train. Starting at the car park, our route takes you past Arundel Castle to the High Street where you’ll be spoilt for choice with quaint shops, cute cafes and pubs. Continuing up Tarrant Street, you’ll find The Old Printworks – a Victorian-style shopping arcade that used to be home to printing rooms, but these days it’s crammed with characterful shops stocking everything from retro clothing to vinyl records. Have a peek inside if you’re looking for something unusual, or simply to admire this historic building.
Our route continues along Tarrant Street and heads up Parson’s Hill, to the striking French-Gothic exterior of Arundel Cathedral. The Cathedral is free to enter, though a small donation is encouraged, and is well worth a stop-in to see the intricately carved murals and rose stained glass window.
Heading away from the paved roads in the centre of town and up through Arundel Park, you’ll find The Grade II listed Hiorne Tower punctuating the horizon line. This is one of the only points en route where dogs can roam freely, though keep an eye on any traffic coming down London Road as you walk. Continuing over the North side of the Tower, dirt footpaths through the Park lead you down to Swanbourne Lake – a perfect stopping point for a cup of tea at the cafe, or a peaceful turn on one of the lake’s rowing boats. Dogs must be kept on lead here due to the abundance of wildlife. From here our route follows the public footpath along the River Arun back into town, where you’ll be treated to picturesque views back towards Arundel Castle and Arundel Cathedral as you pass sheep and cows in the adjacent fields below.
For those with four-legged friends, there are many poo bins throughout the town but these become less frequent as you head into Arundel Park. Be sure to pick up after your dog and take any waste bags with you until you reach a bin. Take care along the roads, especially at busy times, and put your dog on lead where necessary.
